Your Guide to Wedding Music

There are SO many factors that go into choosing all of the music that you want to have at your wedding; timeline, meaningful songs, dance songs, and more. When it comes time to plan your music, work with your DJ or live musicians to make sure your vision for the evening is everything you want it to be.

While you don't pick every single song being played over the course of the evening, there are still some key moments where you may want to customize the playlist for you and your partner. Take a look:

Pre-Ceremony Music

Pre-Ceremony music will be playing while guests are arriving! The tone for this part is totally up to you - most couples have an upbeat instrumental songs playing. Popular choices include the Vitamin String Quartet and The Piano Guys. We have also seen other fun and upbeat songs (think: Uptown Funk by Bruno Mars) in amazing instrumental or piano version.

Processional

Your processional is where you wedding party is about to enter - how do you want to send them down the aisle? Take a look at this throwback to one of the most viral wedding processionals!

Bridal Entrance Music

What music do you want playing as you walk down the aisle? "Here Comes the Bride" is a CLASSIC! However, many brides have chosen to customize their entrance music, whether it's their favorite song, or a special song between the couple - we love the full range! Some of our favorites are "Perfect" by Ed Sheeran and "A Thousand Years" by Christina Perri. Take a look at The Knot's list of 100 Wedding Entrance Songs broken down by category for more inspiration!

Recessional Song

This song will be playing just after you kiss your new spouse, and take your first steps as a married couple. We always suggest a more upbeat song for this special moment! Some of our favorites include: "Signed, Sealed, Delivered" by Stevie Wonder, "Best Day of My Life" by American Authors, or "Stuck Like Glue" from Sugarland!

Reception Entrance

This is the first time your guests will "meet" you as a married couple, so choose something that's upbeat and matches your own relationship with your new spouse! Pick something that sets the mood and kicks off your amazing reception!

First Dance

This one can be the most challenging songs for couples to decide on. What kind of dance do you want to have - funny and energetic? Or more romantic and passionate? We've seen it all! Make sure that whatever you choose makes you both comfortable - after all, this is your big day.

Father/Daughter and Mother/Son Dances

Having a "parent" dance is completely your decision, but these can also be special moments to make sure your music selection is everything that you want. One key thing to consider: talk to your parents about your ideas. Make sure they're on the same page as you as far as the type of dance they would like to do so there are no surprises! We also suggest asking the DJ to invite all of the fathers and daughters, mothers and sons to join the dance floor halfway through the song. It's a great way to include everyone!

Longest Married Dance

Have you heard of this great wedding tradition? Invite all of the married couples at your wedding to the dance floor. 30 seconds into the song, ask those that have been married longer than 1 day on the dance floor. Repeat every 30 seconds for 1 year, 5 years, 20 years, etc., until you get that one last couple that's been married the longest!

Cake Cutting

Most couples forget this important moment - what song do you want playing while you cut the cake? We love "How Sweet it Is" by James Taylor for this moment.

One of the greatest things about weddings in our opinion is that you can customize your day in every single aspect. You don't have to follow 'traditional' rules when it comes to anything - especially music. Make sure this day is one that you will remember forever.
